This master bedroom addition to a Pittsburgh residence is called upon to do more than what it is. Several approaches were studied in an attempt to reconcile expanding a 1970’s suburban ranch-type house. The owner recognized the need to also alter the front to provide a fresh contemporary look while strengthening the front entrance.
The master bedroom is a series of events that unfold in sequence as a respite from the remainder of the home. The bedroom area is the end of the journey with the existing brick of the original house left as a reminder of the past. The low roof pitch permits just enough space in the cathedral ceiling to provide hidden storage space above the closet and dressing area while lending more volume in the bedroom area. Large expanses of glass are included to give a greater spatial sense in this modest size addition. The project remains unbuilt.
