The Discovery & Interactive Science Center’s (DISC) mission is projected to be a hands-on science center with permanent, interactive exhibits designed to engage, educate and entertain people of all ages and, enrich the local community´s quality of life and economic vitality. The Center intends to explore outreach programs that offer onsite and offsite educational programs, special events, and host traveling exhibits to create repeat interest visits.

The theme concept is Eco-Science and the Center will seek its own unique identity amongst other science centers in Pennsylvania. In addition to incorporating sustainable and ’green’ concepts into the building renovation, those same concepts will be presented to the visitors in a way they can experience and apply. Reuse of a 1928 former bank building in a small city downtown is the first step towards reducing its energy impact on the environment.

The architectural concept behind the adaptive reuse project is to learn of the past while looking forward. Many of the original interior building features will be retained and restored where possible. From the new third floor, visitors will be able to see original ornamental features up close that were indistinguishable to earlier generations. The new “insertions” will be clearly contemporary as a reflection of a progressive view of science, but also to distinguish themselves from the original structure. As one views any part of the building, they will see the new architecture with the original features as a backdrop. The contrast between the two will make each component’s contribution important and recognizable. One can walk through the past while looking into the future simultaneously.
