saunder station house addition

saunder station house addition

This primary bedroom / en-suite addition to a charming home solves multiple deficiencies for a young family. Our first formal task was to study possible locations while reconciling the scale of the desired addition with the scale of this 1930s summer house originally built for a Pittsburgh banker. After our analysis, we concluded there were two locations available, discovering the site’s strong forces, along with zoning setbacks, dictated the current placement. The other location would likely cause moving the existing electrical service entrance.

The new primary bedroom suite is connected yet detached from the remainder of the home. The homeowners can quickly enter the house to check on their daughter while having just enough privacy. The placement allows for a connection from the driveway and provides an edge and backdrop for a new outdoor patio area. The steep roof pitch challenges the existing roof as a formal anchor without competing with the home’s strong character. It also affords a small loft overlooking the bedroom. The asymmetrical fenestration provides a new means to interpret the original house as the addition lives in purposeful ambiguity.
