Fritchman Road investigates an idea about single-level living in a suburban context, yet represents it in a minimal, contemporary expression that is respectful and unique to the neighborhood. This 2,064 square feet residence is pared down in every aspect without giving up the essentials to everyday American life for a family of four. Expensive materials are replaced with well-considered proportions, relationships, and expressive details.

After a thorough study for placement within the tight constraints of a triangular site, the house was rotated to take advantage of the available views through local farmland and distant residential neighborhoods, while addressing the twofold condition of the street and private outdoor living. The garage tucks under the main house to conceal it as well as take advantage of the needed basement; a smart move within a tight budget.

The familiar program includes three bedrooms on the upper floor with an open combination of living, dining, and kitchen. The entry foyer splits the two functional bars passing between the living zone and the sleeping zone. An office with a glass front and door occupies this in-between zone welcoming guests with a peek through to the distant views. The exterior cladding quietly speaks of the dual-site conditions through a change of color and texture.
