Country Road Residence
In a semi-rural setting just off of Route 819 two sisters set out to increase the accessibility of their parents home. Their goal was to add onto the structure to provide better expanded living space and an accessible master bedroom suite. All of this was to fit the existing architecture and make it look as if it belonged there all along. The architect drew from the existing language and abstracted a few key elements into two contemporary additions to this 1950’s ranch home. The existing brick "quoining" was celebrated with horizontal brick courses in a complimentary brick. Roof lines and window patterns were repeated in larger groupings to allow for better day lighting. A former bedroom was converted into an accessible bath with roll in shower. A former closet was converted into a laundry area within the master bedroom suite. Three years later, the same client commissioned lee CALISTI architecture+design to expand on the first addition with a new family room, a private bedroom suite for one retired sister who moved back home and a new kitchen within the existing house. The new language was repeated with the introduction of landscape features to expand the living spaces outdoors. A main axis extends through the original house from the kitchen to the new outdoor covered patio area making the interior spaces feel larger than they actually are. Another parallel axis is a circulation spine that extends through the original front porch addition to the back of the new family roof addition. The design revolved around the family and extended family's living patterns, visits and celebrations. Contractor: Vince Building Company |
